Aims and objectives

Rhythm in Movement Dance Company aims to provide outstanding dance and fitness training in a safe, happy environment. We endeavour to make dance enjoyable and accessible to everyone in order to achieve their very best.

We aspire to develop the student’s transferable life skills including but not limited to self-discipline, self-motivation, confidence, respect, commitment, creativity, ownership, leadership, team work, decision making, problem solving, communication skills amongst others.

We aim to promote each individual’s potential to develop each student at their own individual rate to ensure they are progressing to their own specific goals.

Examinations

IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association)

The school offers exams in at both graded and vocationally graded levels:

      Ballet

      Tap

      Theatre Craft

      Contemporary Modern

      Acrobatics

Examinations support the standards in teaching to ensure the very best provisions for each student. They form a set of motivational milestones from

beginner level to a standard of proficiency and artistry appropriate for entry to higher education, whether your child wants to follow an educational route or a performing arts route.

The IDTA exams are recognised by the office of qualifications and examinations regulations (Ofqual) who are the regulator of qualifications in England. All exams from grade one are recognised by (Ofqual) and the Welsh government department for Children, education, lifelong learning and skills (dcells) and appear on the qualifications and credit framework (QCF). These exam marks are put on your child’s educational records and the points count towards college/6th form/university applications.

Some limitations apply for entry to some examinations:

Minimum age limits – to protect the health and safety of young children where physical development may be insufficient to meet the demands of the syllabus.

In higher grades certain sections of the examinations are designed specifically for either male or female dancers however all work will be taught and learnt.  This reflects the requirements of the particular dance genre.

Students will be entered into examinations at the teachers/principal’s discretion dependent on the level, ability and readiness

Regular exam practices in students own time is crucial in attaining exceptional marks to achieve the required standard. The teacher/principle may send practice videos home in order to assist with extra practice. If the student does not attend all practices the month prior to their examinations the student will be removed from the exam session.

Exam fees are requested approximately 6 weeks prior to the examination.  It is essential that the appropriate fee is paid promptly, if the fee is not paid by the requested deadline date your child will not be entered into the exam session. Payment plans can be arranged with the teacher/principle. The original published exam date may change due to exam application procedure, parents will be notified of upcoming examinations as soon as an external examiner has been confirmed.

Result take some time to be returned, feedback sheets and marks will be given out to dancers during class once received and will not be disclosed before this. Awards evening happens annually usually during the autumn term where certificates and awards are given out from examinations.

Off Timetable Classes

Rhythm in movement holidays are as follows:

One week off for October half term, may bank holiday week

Two weeks off at Christmas and Easter

Four weeks off over summer (during August)

During these weeks we put on additional open classes on for students of all ages and inclusive for external children. During the summer and Easter in addition to one off sessions we also run a week long dance project.

Performance Opportunities

Our show is hosted annually usually in February/March which includes all students. Extra rehearsals are sometimes arranged if necessary. Pupils participating in the show are required to purchase the specific costume and accessories for the show which are purchased directly from the school unless otherwise specified, information is sent out at least 10 weeks prior to the show. The dancer is required to attend all shows and the dress/technical rehearsal as well as all the classes leading up to the show unless a reasonable justification has been made and agreed with the teacher.

Rhythm in Movement are also invited to perform at various events and performances throughout the year. Our senior and Intermediate dancers usually take part in these events however other classes may also be invited to take part depending on the event.

Chaperone License

For our annual show we require the help of parents and friends of rhythm in movement to help backstage, without enough help the show cannot go ahead. This requires a DBS check (an application form) and undergo an online safeguarding course to ensure they are following county council and Rhythm in Movement’s in house guidelines which run alongside these. This process needs to be started at least three months in advance of the show however once completed the chaperone license last for three years.
